About Us

The Screen Studies Group came into existence in 2001, in response to the spread of film and television studies across the University of London. In addition to courses within other departments, the creation of dedicated Screen Studies departments in some colleges and the appointment of high profile professors gave Screen Studies in the University of London a new impetus and an international reputation. The Screen Studies Group is one of the world’s largest networks of screen media scholars and a major University of London initiative promoting research, teaching and public debate across the colleges of the university. The group currently includes close to 100 members of staff teaching Screen Studies within the University of London.

In 2003, the SSG held its first symposium, designed to create public dialogue on Screen Studies topics and stimulate debate on topics of interest to scholars and graduate students. The symposia, which began as biennial events, now take place three times a year. Events organized by, or in conjunction with, the SSG include: Film History in Question (2003), The First Global Vernacular (2004), Hallyuwood: Korean Screen Culture Goes Global (2005), The British Film Institute and Its Publics (2006), Eminent Europeans (2007), Geographies of Theory (2008), The Nouvelle Vague: Fifty Years On (2009), and Indian Cinema Studies: Bollywood and Beyond (2010).

Inter-collegiate option course sharing

The SSG has also enabled the exchange of Master’s options between the relevant schools and departments. In this way, students across the university can benefit from its wide and varied expertise in topics related to screen studies. This has been a very popular initiative, used widely by students across the University of London who can thus enrich their syllabus.

PhD training

The SSG initiated its first training event for PhD students with an AHRC-funded two-day workshop in 2005. Events have included such topics as archival research and textual analysis, and the 2011 training days dealt with  ‘Researching the New’ (28-29 October 2011). For details of the upcoming  2012/13 postgraduate training day see the events page.
